Making an app in 18 days

The following is the first issue of a daily newsletter I'm sending out which chronicles the progress of making an app in 18 days.

Why 18 days? I'm heading out of town, and that felt like a solid deadline.

If you would like to receive these daily updates, you can subscribe to the newsletter here!

Day 1 - Counting on you

Thank you for joining me on this little experiement/journey. A couple weeks ago I made a little app for myself to help keep track of the number of pushups I was doing each day.

This got me thinking... I could make an app that is for counting anything! So, that's what I'm gonna do.

There are lots of things you can count each day:

  • Pushups 💪
  • Glasses of water 🥤
  • Amount of caffeine ☕️
  • Step count 👟
  • Calories 🍔
  • Practicing an instrument 🎷
  • Bottles/diaper changes 🍼 (shoutout to all the parents reading this)
  • Items on a list of things to count 🤔

I want this to be the best app on the planet for counting things. This means not only the best way to view how many times you've done something, but the best way to enter that data as well.

Now is the part where I ask for your feedback! You can reply directly to this email.

  • Does this even sound interesting? (Don't be afraid to say no!)
  • What things would you count?
  • What would you call this apps? (The current working title is "Reps" but I am very open to suggestions.)
  • What kind of features would you want?

I have lots and lots of ideas for where this will head... I haven't started writing any code yet, but I will probably borrow from the scaffolding I wrote for the pushups app.

Tomorrow I hope to write some code and send you all some mockups of some of the designs I'm thinking about.

Cheers!
-Chad
